Traveling by bicycle offers freedom, adventure, and meaningful encounters, while being resource-efficient. We present ELSEWHERE: ALONE IN AFRICA, a film followed by a panel discussion with filmmaker and adventurer Anselm Pahnke. 15,000 kilometers. 414 days. 15 countries. Anselm crossed the African continent by bicycle, capturing breathtaking footage with a small compact camera.
Throughout his journey, Anselm develops a deep love for this vast continent, as well as a profound trust in both the people he meets and in himself.
The film won the Guild Film Prize for Best Documentary (2019), Anselm Pahnke is a gifted speaker. The evening promises to be an inspiring encounter with adventure and a motivation to rethink future travel in a more “terran” way, by bike, train, or bus.

PETRO MELANCHOLIA – Film and Panel Discussion
Oil means wealth, power and dependence. In “Petro Melancholia,” Mathias Frick explores the emotional and cultural dimensions of our relationship with fossil fuels. The film takes viewers from abandoned oil rigs to glimmering gas stations and asks: What remains when oil runs out?
With essayistic depth, it evokes a melancholic portrait of an era nearing its end. “Petro Melancholia” is not a conventional environmental film but an atmospheric reflection on progress, loss, and the longing for another way of life, beyond the fossil (night)mare.

Millions of children around the world are frustrated that nothing is being done to protect the planet and therefore their future. Until now, they have only been able to express their concerns through protests in the streets. In the film Future Council, director Damon Gameau invites eight children on an epic journey across Europe in a school bus powered by biofuel. Their mission is to better understand the state of our planet, find solutions, and, above all, bring the conversation from the streets into the boardrooms of some of the world’s biggest polluters and most influential companies.

The Green Deal, Europe’s new growth strategy, is Brussels’ recipe for saving the planet from climate collapse. With electric cars and renewable energy, the EU aims to promote economic growth while protecting the environment. But is that really possible?
Green technologies require large amounts of critical metals, most of which come from China. To reduce dependencies, politicians are advocating the reopening of “green” mines in Europe. For the people living in these areas, however, this raises serious concerns about their livelihoods, like Héctor, a Spanish farmer, and Matti and Karin Niia, two Swedish reindeer herders. They are doing everything they can to fight projects that threaten their way of life.
