The Battle for Laikipia

Daphne Mathiaraki, Peter Murimi

2024 | KEN | 94 min

Original with English subtitles

There are two major problems in the life of Kenyan cattle rancher Simon: climate change is drying out the earth and his cattle can no longer find enough food. And they can no longer use the traditional migration routes because the white landowners have fenced in their land and are using guns to prevent the fences from being crossed.

On the other hand, there is the white farmer Maria, who is also affected by the drought on her ranch of over 30 square kilometers and who wants to prevent the foreign herds from grazing on her land at all costs. She sees herself as a local just like the cattle ranchers, as her family has lived here for over a hundred years.

Directors Daphne Matziaraki and Pete Murimi portray the conflict with empathy and brutal openness. Their film shows how unresolved historical injustices and climate change affect the indigenous farming community as well as the white farmers.
