In Niger, deforestation has left large areas deserted. This appealed to Tony Rinaudo: in 1981, the young agricultural scientist tried to plant trees, but the seedlings did not survive. Rinaudo then discovered the still intact, huge root system of the cleared trees beneath the ground. Using a simple technique, he managed to grow trees from them and push back the desert. The Australian received the Alternative Nobel Prize for this in 2018.
