Crowded beaches, overrun tourist attractions and souvenir shops on every corner, offers for tours to historical sites or exotic experiences with animals: this is what the annual vacation of thousands of tourists looks like. Mass tourism has been growing for years - even though most destinations are slowly but surely reaching their capacity limits.
"The Last Tourist" shows the dark side of mass tourism: from the mistreatment of animals to the curiosity of tourists, from European and American resorts and chains that exploit or exclude local workers and companies, to supposed aid programs in which young adults from the West - without any pedagogical or professional training - can try out teaching for a few weeks. But the film doesn't stop there, it shows that there are other ways and that traveling beyond destructive mass tourism is possible.
